How to use a RASCI Matrix in Product Management
A RASCI Matrix is a tool used in project management and organizational development to define and clarify roles and responsibilities for tasks and deliverables within a scope or domain. We have used it intensively and successfully to organize our teams during our agile transformation towards a product-oriented organization. The acronym RASCI stands for:
R — Responsible: The person or role responsible for executing a task. They are the doers and are tasked with completing the work.
A — Accountable: The person or role ultimately answerable for the correct and thorough completion of the deliverable or task. They often are economically accountable for the task. They ensure that prerequisites and quality standards are met, and enable the person or role that is responsible for a task to properly do the job.
S — Support: Those who provide resources or help the responsible person or role to complete the task successfully. This person or role must assist and support to complete the task.
C — Consulted: The person or role that offers expertise and insights to inform decision-making on the task. These subject matter experts and advisors provide necessary information and feedback before a task is completed.
I — Informed: The person or role that is kept up-to-date on the progress of the task or the deliverable. Often they are informed on achieving a milestone or after the task is completed.
