The Fish Model is a visual representation that helps to illustrate the transformation of an organization. On the left, we see the current state of the organization represented through two values the revenue and the costs, in the middle we see how these values develop themselves during the transformation, and on the right we see the improved desired state in terms of bigger revenue growth and reduced operational costs.

The Fish Model — Example of a transformation process from project-led to product-led company

Why is the fish model important and what is it used for?

The fish model is an abstract representation of a transformation process. And as such it is a great tool for visualization of such a transformation. It explains the difficulties in the current state of the organization, the challenges that the organization needs to overcome during the transformation process, and the desired outcome after the transformation is made successfully.

It is therefore used to enhance the communication about the transformation, and to talk about expectations and transporting the importance of the change.

We can use it to transport the “why” we need to change.
